Kefir should be consumed as part of a healthy balanced diet to ensure adequate nutritional intakes. The Eatwell Guide recommends 2-3 servings of dairy a day as part of a balanced diet.
A recommended serving of yogurt or kefir is around 150g. Activia kefir drinks come in a 280g bottle and kefir spoonables a 150g pot. We recommend you have kefir daily as part of a balanced diet as consistency is key when it comes to gut health.
Kefir is traditionally made with kefir grains which contain a blend of different bacteria and yeasts. Activia’s is made with 16 live culture strains! It should be consumed as part of a balanced and varied diet. Evidence shows that regular consumption of kefir can help modulate the gut microbiome, but this varies from person to person and depends on other factors, like diet, stress and sleep.
You can enjoy kefir at any time of the day!
Although kefir can support gut health in some people, it could potentially increase symptoms of IBS. Please speak to your healthcare professional before introducing kefir into your diet.
Everyone is different, and constipation can have many causes. Including kefir as part of a balanced diet with plenty of fibre may help, but other factors also play a role. If you’re concerned about constipation or need dietary advice, it’s best to speak to a healthcare professional.
Kefir is a food, not a treatment or cure for any condition. If you’re worried about diarrhoea or need dietary guidance, it’s best to consult a healthcare professional. Kefir in general is suitable as part of a healthy balanced diet but is not designed to treat diarrhoea.
Kefir is a fermented dairy product that is made with live cultures. Some people find that introducing fermented foods like kefir gradually can be well tolerated, but others may experience digestive discomfort, especially if they are sensitive to lactose or have underlying conditions. There is no conclusive evidence that kefir specifically reduces bloating or gas, and it should not be considered a treatment or cure for digestive symptoms. If someone experiences persistent bloating or discomfort, it’s best to consult a healthcare professional. Kefir in general is suitable as part of a healthy balanced diet and can support gut health* .
*Activia Kefir contains calcium which contributes to the normal function of digestive enzymes
Fermented products like kefir will contain higher levels of histamine due to the presence of certain bacteria or yeast. However histamine intolerance is difficult to diagnose and symptoms may not always be related to diet. Please speak to a healthcare professional for advice on histamine intolerance, before making changes to your diet.
Kefir is made by fermenting milk, so it does contain lactose. During fermentation, some lactose is broken down, which usually results in lower levels than in regular milk. Activia Kefir doesn’t measure lactose content, but it’s made with probiotics which can improve lactose digestion in individuals who have difficulty digesting lactose. Please speak to a healthcare professional before making changes to your diet.
Kefir is a fermented drink that can be made from different bases, such as milk (dairy kefir) or sugar water (water kefir). Activia’s kefir is made with dairy milk, so it is not dairy-free.
If you’re looking for a dairy-free option, water kefir is an alternative, but it’s a different product and not part of the Activia range.
Kefir is made by fermenting milk, so it does contain lactose. Activia kefir is not tested for FODMAP suitability. Please speak to a healthcare professional for advise on FODMAP suitability.

Yogurt is a dairy product; it provides a source of calcium to support your bones* & gut health**. Yogurt is also fermented with live cultures; there are billions of these live cultures in every Activia product.
Specialists at Danone designed Activia to contain our exclusive Bifidus ActiRegularis. This particular strain was selected for its remarkable ability to survive in milk. In humans, high numbers of Bifidus ActiRegularis have been shown to survive the passage through the entire gastrointestinal tract.
Live cultures are present in all fermented yogurts and drinks which are not heat processed after fermentation. The live cultures exist in groups, known as ferments. All Activia yogurts and yogurt drinks have a unique blend of 5 ferments, including Bifidus ActiRegularis, which is exclusive to the Activia brand. We carefully select our ferments and make them grow and thrive at the right quantity, to deliver the best possible taste experience.
The fermentation of Activia takes place at 37°C, in a less acidic environment than a traditional yogurt. This enables our billions of live cultures to thrive, creating our deliciously smooth and creamy Activia texture.
Fermentation is the process when bacteria, yeasts or other microorganisms break down sugars and carbohydrates and produce different acids, gasses or alcohol. In our case, this means our unique blend of 5 ferments transforming milk into delicious yogurt.
First, we prepare a tank of pasteurised milk, which is packed with proteins and also contains lactose. Turns out that lactose is the favourite food of many of our yogurt bacterial strains. Then we add our unique blend of 5 ferments to the milk, to begin the fermentation process.
As we heat the milk to 37°, the bacteria begin to feed on the lactose, which is converted to lactic acid. The bacteria multiply, whilst the lactic acid lowers the pH of the milk; transforming it to a smooth and creamy texture.
The end result? You swallow a mouthful of delicious Activia, packed with billions of bifidus that survive all the way to your colon to meet your gut.
A healthy gut can be defined as a state of physical and mental well-being without gastrointestinal symptoms that require the consultation of a doctor, absence of any disease affecting the gut, and also the absence of risk factors for diseases affecting gut. Many factors impact your gut and your microbiota. Some of these are less controllable, for example C-section, antibiotics, stress, and hygiene. Other factors can be controlled through lifestyle choices, for example eating a balanced diet and having an active lifestyle.
At Activa we believe it is important to eat dairy products as part of a balanced and varied diet. All of our products provide a source of calcium, which supports your gut health, by contributing to the normal function of digestive enzymes.
